 With claws like little hooks and a look of satisfaction, the mother squirrel holds the nut between her paws like a treasure she has fought for. Sunlight filters through the bare branches, catching the flames of her fur – warm red, vibrant orange and soft gray. Everything about her radiates relief and determination.

 Climbed into the tree's rough embrace, surrounded by budding spring and the ancient pattern of the bark, she enjoys the moment. Her ears stand erect like two sentinels, but she allows herself a little respite – a peaceful second where everything is about nourishment, closeness and the rhythm of nature.

 She has found what she was looking for – and in this image, frozen in time, we celebrate the strength, cleverness and love that drives a young mother through the many trials of the forest.
